BIO

Art had always been one of those subjects I avoided at school. I thought I could get away with it, too, until postgrad.
I was thrown into the deep end and found myself responsible for illustrating species entirely new to science.
In a short span of time I trained myself to produce illustrations that I believe can serve the scientific community for ages to come.
From this experience I have found a new way to express my appreciation of the natural world.
Here, I hope to display both my published and amateur work as a portfolio and documentation of my growth.

PUBLISHED ILLUSTRATIONS

The species below have my illustrations in published scientific articles.

Some illustrations (e.g. whole animal dorsal view) were not included in the final publication, but are displayed here for completeness.

SEPIOLOIDEA JAELAE SANTOS ET AL., 2022

Illustrated in: Santos et al., (2022):

Two New ‘Bottletail Squids’ (Cephalopoda: Sepiadariidae: Sepioloidea) from New Zealand, with New Observations on Sepioloidea pacifica (Kirk, 1882).

Sepioloidea jaelae is the first of two new bottletail squid species described in my first publication. With a body of less than 3cm in length, positioning specimens for imaging without causing any damage was a big challange. One of the highlights for me in illustrating this set of images was capturing the intricate folds of buccal tissue (tissue around the mouth) found in the vast majority of female specimens.

SEPIOLOIDEA VIRGILIOI SANTOS ET AL., 2022

Illustrated in: Santos et al., (2022):

Two New ‘Bottletail Squids’ (Cephalopoda: Sepiadariidae: Sepioloidea) from New Zealand, with New Observations on Sepioloidea pacifica (Kirk, 1882).

Sepioloidea virgilioi is the second of two new bottletail squids described in my first publication. This species is particularly interesting due to its extreme sexual dimorphism. I did my utmost to showcase the extraordinary differences in male and female arm crowns. I am especially happy with how the hectocotylus illustrations turned out.

SEPIOLOIDEA PACIFICA (KIRK, 1882)

Illustrated in: Santos et al., (2022):

Two New ‘Bottletail Squids’ (Cephalopoda: Sepiadariidae: Sepioloidea) from New Zealand, with New Observations on Sepioloidea pacifica (Kirk, 1882).

Sepioloidea pacifica was the only nominal Sepioloidea species recorded in New Zealand waters prior to Santos et al., (2022). Since adequate whole organism illustrations were already available in its neotype designation (Dell, 1959), I only illustrated specific body parts for comparison to my two new species S. jaelae and S. virgilioi. I completed the hectocotylus illustration much later in the research process, and as such I was able to focus on experimenting with higher density stippling to achieve greater detail.
